Early life and family
Khan's father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar who supported the Khudai Khidmatgar, a nonviolent resistance movement led by Abdul Ghaffar Khan that aimed for a united and independent India. Mir was aligned with Abdul Ghaffar Khan and associated with the Indian National Congress. He was also the cousin of Shah Nawaz Khan, a major general in the Indian National Army. Khan stated that his paternal grandfather, Mir Jan Muhammad Khan, was an ethnic Pashtun (Pathan) from Afghanistan. However, his paternal cousins in Peshawar later clarified that the family spoke Hindko and originally hailed from Kashmir, settling in Peshawar centuries ago, contradicting the earlier claim about his grandfather's ethnicity. As of 2010, Khan's paternal family still resided in Peshawar's Qissa Khwani Bazaar. In 1946, Mir relocated to Delhi to study law at Delhi University. Following the partition of India in 1947, he remained in Delhi and only returned to Peshawar many years later. Khan's mother, Lateef Fatima, was a magistrate and the daughter of a senior government engineer. His parents exchanged vows in 1959.

Acting career
From 1988 to 1992, Aamir Khan made his debut in television and film. His first major role was in Lekh Tandon's TV series Dil Dariya, which began filming in 1988. However, due to production delays, his television debut ended up being the 1989 series Fauji directed by Raj Kumar Kapoor. In Fauji, Khan portrayed the lead character Abhimanyu Rai, offering a realistic portrayal of army cadet training. This role led to appearances in Aziz Mirza's Circus (1989–90) and Mani Kaul's miniseries Idiot (1992). Additionally, Khan had minor roles in Umeed (1989), Wagle Ki Duniya (1988–90), and the English-language TV movie In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989). In April 1991, Khan reversed his decision about acting in films, using it as a distraction from the sorrow of his mother's passing. He relocated from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue a Bollywood career full-time and swiftly landed roles in four films. His debut offer was in Hema Malini's first directorial venture, Dil Aashna Hai, with shooting commencing in June. Khan's film debut occurred in Deewana, released in June 1992, where he starred alongside Divya Bharti as the second male lead after Rishi Kapoor. Deewana's success kickstarted Khan's Bollywood journey, earning him the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. In the same year, he appeared in his first leading roles in Chamatkar, Dil Aashna Hai, and the comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, marking the beginning of several collaborations with actress Juhi Chawla. Khan's initial film characters showcased vibrant energy and enthusiasm, introducing a fresh acting style to the screen.
